The Cambridge History has long been considered one
of the most important works in literary history and criticism ever published.
This 18 volume encyclopedia contains a wide selection of writing on orators,
humorists, poets. newspaper columnists, religious leaders, economics, Native
Americans, song writers, and even non-English language writing, such as Yiddish
and Creole. On this on-line version, American literature is broken into 6
historical periods. Each period is further divided by sections and chapters, and
it includes separate entries for important authors.

poems. Real Audio is required to hear clips of many of the poems. There is a

with homework and more.
Representative Poetry Online

This site is based on a poetry textbook, this database contains nearly 3000
English-language poems from more than 400 poets. Founded and edited by an
English professor, the site covers poetry from Caedmon to today. Search by the
poet alphabetically or chronologically or by the poem title or first or last
line. Poems can be chosen at random. Keyword searching is available. There is a
glossary, and a timeline.
