American Foreign Policy American Foreign Policy Council Founded in 1982, AFPC is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing information to those who make or influence the foreign policy of the United States and to assisting world leaders, particularly in the former USSR, with building democracies and market economies. African Development Bank Group This is the “premier financial development institution of Africa.” More than 75 countries from around the world support this bank. It promotes economic and social development in Africa by mobilizing capital for major projects. The site contains information about its mission, history, and for the insights offered into the unique economic problems of the continent under Development Topics.
Asian Development Bank This bank was established in 1966 to combat poverty throughout Asia and the Pacific. 59 countries own the bank, headquartered in Manila. The site contains information about the overall development outlook for the region and reports about the individual countries. Of key interest is the online edition of its Key Indicators of Developing Asian and Pacific Countries 2001.
The Bank of England http://www.bankofengland.co.uk This is one of the world’s oldest central banks. Established in 1694, it is the central bank for the entire United Kingdom’s financial system. The site has information about the country’s financial and monetary health, as well as its financial dealings with other countries around the world. There is extensive information about monetary policy, financial markets, banknotes, and banking, financial stability, and the banks view on the euro.
Bank of Japan The bank implements the monetary policy of Japan and issues and manages its currency. It also cooperates with the central banks of other major countries to ensure international financial stability, operating through such global forums as the Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund. There is an interesting section about the currency of Japan that features a history of the yen.
Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System The Federal Reserve Board, the central bank of the United States, was established by Congress in 1913 “to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system.” It is responsible for setting and overseeing the monetary policy of the U.S. The site is loaded with domestic and international financial statistics as well as an archive of surveys, reports, and working papers that cover virtually all aspects of banking.
European Central Bank This bank provides a forum for the central banks of the European Union. One of the principal responsibilities of the bank is to manage the euro and establish a unified monetary policy for these countries.
Inter-American Development Bank Known as the Latin Bank, it was founded in 1959 to promote economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean. The site offers a wealth of information about the region’s economy and detailed reports on the bank’s projects.
International Monetary Fund The IMF was founded in 1946 and has a current membership of more than 180 Countries. This site, one of the best on the Web, contains a comprehensive overview of key international financial and economic issues.
World Bank Group The World Bank Group was founded in 1944 by a conference of 44 countries (over 180 today) at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. This is the one of the world’s largest sources of development assistance, provided more than $17 billion in loans to member countries during fiscal 2001. The site is an excellent source for information about the economics of individual member countries as well as regional economic reports.
