FRESHMAN WOW ...

Freshman WOW, a new academic program for ninth grade students at Woodbridge High School, will begin in fall 2009. This program is funded through an AT&T Aspire Grant in partnership with Irvine Unified School District and the Irvine Public Schools Foundation. Freshman WOW provides support to maintain a ‘college going culture’ for selected incoming ninth grade students.

The program includes:

  • --One week academic camp in August Trained ‘super mentors’ who will provide a year of weekly meetings and other activities for the purpose of mentoring
  • --A year long, one class period academic course that focuses on personal, academic, and college and career planning for high school success
  • --Guest speakers to promote maintaining a college-going culture
  • --Parent involvement through specific workshops
  • --College visits

FRESHMAN WOW Students WILL:

 

  • --Develop positive decision making skills
  • --Explore Colleges and Careers
  • --Uncover unique student qualities

FRESHMAN WOW Students :

  • ...are prepared for their high school courses
  • ...learn what it takes to get into college
  • ...work harder in the classroom
  • ...get to know their counselor
  • ...join 2 or more extra-curricular activities
  • ...accept that they are smart and capable
  • ...imagine themselves going to college

Prerequisites for FRESHMAN WOW Students :

  • --Desire to go to college, are motivated to follow the college prep curricu-lum, but want extra support and guidance to make college a reality
  • --Apply for admission to FRESHMANWOW (see link on this page for application)
  • --Be nominated by the school principal, school counselor, or teachers at their middle school
  • --Earn a GPA of 2.5 or higher in grade 8
  • --Write a short essay about what they want to achieve in high school
  • --Attend WOW camp in the summer
  • --Meet with a mentor every week
  • --Join in school activities
  • --Attend workshops and Parents / guardians attend training
  • --Complete practice college admissions tests
  • --Visit colleges
